Dear [Insert MP’s Name],
I am writing to you as a concerned constituent from [Your Town/City in Berkshire] to urge you to take immediate and principled action regarding the UK's financial and political relationship with the state of Israel, in light of its ongoing violations of international law and human rights against the Palestinian people.
The situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories remains a matter of grave concern. The illegal blockade of Gaza has created an inhumane humanitarian crisis, which former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described as a "collective punishment for which there must be accountability." The UN has repeatedly warned that Gaza is on the verge of being uninhabitable, with its water supply almost entirely unsafe for consumption and its healthcare system on the brink of collapse.
Furthermore, the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the violent response to civilian protests, such as during the Great Return March, demonstrate a clear and consistent disregard for international law. Human Rights Watch has noted that the actions of Israeli forces have often resulted in the "foreseeable deaths and injuries of demonstrators...who posed no imminent threat to life."
Despite this, UK public bodies and financial institutions continue to be invested in companies that are complicit in these violations. This includes investments in firms that supply the Israeli military with weapons and technology used to enforce the occupation, and companies that operate in and profit from Israel's illegal settlements.
As my elected representative, I urge you to uphold the UK’s obligations under international law and to ensure that our nation is not complicit in these human rights abuses. I call upon you to:
Publicly call for and support divestment: Urge UK public bodies, including local government pension schemes and banks, to divest from companies that are complicit in Israel's violations of international law.
Raise this issue in Parliament: Question the government on what steps it is taking to ensure that UK investments, including at a local government level here in Berkshire, are not inadvertently funding or profiting from the illegal occupation and the violation of Palestinian human rights.
Advocate for an ethical arms embargo: Demand the UK government halts the sale of arms to Israel that risk being used in violation of international law, in accordance with its own export guidelines.
The UK has a historic and moral responsibility to the Palestinian people. Continuing to allow financial and military support for a system of occupation and oppression is a stain on our nation's commitment to human rights and justice.
I look forward to your response outlining the specific actions you will take on this urgent matter.
Yours sincerely,
